TOPS was initially launched in 1996 as a joint venture with the Dutch supermarket giant, Royal Ahold and Central Retail Corporation. It is the first Thai supermarket to have set up centralized distribution centers for fresh foods and dry grocery products. These centers have enabled the company to provide better quality control and have earned TOPS superior freshness and food safety certifications from industry and public health organizations.

TOPS became a wholly-owned Central Retail company in early 2004. The company is successfully repositioning its family chain and represent the variety of customers shopping lifestyle through four different formats; Central Food Hall, the best food store in Asia; Tops Market, the best international supermarket in Thailand; Tops Super, everyday supermarket for smart shopper and Tops Daily, a mini-supermarket for everyday needs.

As of 2006, the TOPS operates around 94 stores, and the company plans to continue expanding by opening 10 more free-standing stores annually over the next five years.
