"Love the World, Live the World with Care”


Central Retail CSR

    Central retail consider the interests of society by taking responsibility for the impact of their activities on customer, suppliers, employee, shareholders, communities and the environment in all aspects of their operations.

This obligation is to extend beyond the status obligation to comply with law and social regulation and voluntarily taking further steps to improve the quality of life for employees and their families as well as for the local community and society at large.

           Busaba Chirathivat, Central Retail Corporation’s Vice President for Corporate Communications commented on the project “All of us have a role to play in loving and living the world with care, it is thus the company’s corporate social responsibility to show our commitment in raising awareness, promote rethinking and encourage all parts of the society that we touch to come and join us in the effort”

Central Retail efforts are concentrated on the following programs:

            1. Education
            2. Historical Sites
            3. Community
4. Sports & Health
            5. Green Lifestyle

Our CSR programme in the past encompasses both internal and external communities such as giving scholarship to fund the education of children of our staff and students in need in the country’s northern and northeastern region, Wat Phra Singh Temple restoration, Central Mini Marathon, Blood Drive for Red Cross, Energy and fuel reduction measures, Mangrove Restoration and programmes to show our gratitude to His Majesty the King.

In 2008 our CSR campaigns are:

1. Education

  1. Funding 750 Scholarships to 87 schools in the North and Northeastern region of Thailand deem in most need by the Ministry of Education.
  2. Completing the Food Canteen at Samern Pitayakom School in Chiangmai to provide nutritious and sanitary lunch for students and teachers of the school
  3. Hosting “Central Group Junior Marketeer Campaign Year 3” to invite students at 120 universities in Thailand to compete for a scholarship worth over 800,000 Baht. Moreover, the winning team will get hands-on experience working and executing their marketing plan at one of Central Group’s businesses.
  4. Internal education programme for staff children continues and Central Retail  

      Academy gives employee a chance to earn up to a graduate degree in retail 
business management.

2. Historical sites

We take Confucius teaching to heart “Study the past if you would define the future”. We believe by learning about our past and helping to preserve it, we are building something that is substantial for our future generations. Thus, Central Retail supports historical sites and temples restoration to conserve National heritage for example, Wat Prasingh. Buddhist religious ceremonies are also held to preserve and promote our National religion.

3. Community

            Central Retail will hold Operation Smile in it’s 2nd year to give happiness to those who shy away from smiling due to their deformities. Other projects are “This hour is for you, Kid!” where staff donate an hour worth of their time (pay) to children in need. “Do good for our Father” employee CSR continues with 3 campaign 1. Promote living within one’s mean   2. Do Good for your family: reduce consumption of alcohol, smoking and frivolous spending and 3. “Blood Drive for our Majesty” to donate to Thai Red Cross. The target for this year is set to surpass the 8.2 million CC. raised during last year.  

4. Sports and Health

A Healthy lifestyle gives a healthy life and thus good quality of life. Central Retail promotes a healthy lifestyle with projects such as  “SuperSports Mini Marathon Year 2” held on 13th July to encourage our community to participate in a sporting event as well as raise funds for a good cause. Other major campaign includes “SuperSports wants our children to be strong” by donating sporting goods to a number of schools the Bangkok Metropolitan Area and beyond. Supersports and the National Olympic Committee of Thailand (NOCT) under the royal patronage have recently launched campaign “ Cheer Thai to Win Gold (Medals)” at CentralWorld. All our store are to see wristbands, designed by HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana. The wristbands are priced at 29 Baht with only 100,000 items produced in order to support the athletes who will attend the 29th Olympic Games in Beijing.

For staff, the annual ‘Central Group Sport Day’ and Central Retail Games’ are also held, to promote the love of sports.

5. Green lifestyle

Central Retail believes that all of us are responsible for the world we live in “Project Green Lifestyle” is thus born to encourage all in our community to do our part. Central is the first department store to ban smoking in its stores. The mangrove forest planting in Phuket will continues this year. All parts of the company also practice Reduce-Reuse-Recycle, using our resources in the most efficient and effective manner.

Global Warming is a subject that Central Retail takes very seriously particularly in the reduction of plastic bags   “Project TOPS Go Green and Central…Love the Earth” aims to reduce the use of plastic bags by 25% annually. Central Retail Corporation major brands will also start using bio-degradable plastic bags from this year namely, Powerbuy, SuperSports and homeWorks.

Reducing Electricity and Energy consumption is also in practice at Central Retail
Since the programme officially started 3 years ago, electricity has been reduced by 3.6 million unit. Staff are also encouraged to join this campaign by reducing energy both at their home and the office. Another campaign to promote good disposing of harzardous waste is also important in ensuring that our environment shall remain safe.

The Green Building as introduced by ZEN World at CentralWorld, uses technologies to promote the most efficient use of energy. The right balance of energy conservation and a comfortable ambience is achieved while complying with law and social regulation.

Busaba end by saying ‘I hope you will join us… so our world can live as one’ Although Central Retail in one the larger corporations in Thailand employing more than 30,000 employees, we are still a small part of the society. We hope to create a ripple effect starting from our employee, extending to their family and friends and the ripple continues on and on. Our aim is that someday, all of us shall love this world by living in this world with care.’

            นอกจากนี้ เซ็นทรัลรีเทลได้ดำเนินนโยบายตอบแทนสังคมและอนุรักษ์สิ่งแวดล้อมเป็นประเด็นสำคัญ โดยคำนึงถึงหลัก “บริษัทคนไทยมุ่งตอบแทนคนไทยด้วยกิจกรรมเพื่อสังคมในด้านต่างๆ”
