Tops Teams Up with DHL Supply Chain Thailand to Roll Out Clean-Energy Electric Trucks, Paving the Way for Sustainable Green Logistics with a 5-Year Plan to Slash Emissions by 13,335 Tons

Bangkok, December 4, 2023 - Tops, a food business under Central Retail, has joined forces with DHL Supply Chain Thailand, a global leader in logistics, to position itself as a frontrunner in 'Green & Sustainable Retail'. This initiative involves the introduction of electric-powered 4-wheeled trucks, utilizing 100% electric energy.

The initial phase will see the first 10 units of electric vehicle (EV) trucks distributing the goods from DHL Bangna Logistics Campus to Tops Daily stores throughout Bangkok. Additionally, Tops has further plans to expand its fleet of EV trucks within its logistics system, aiming to increase the number to 29 vehicles by 2024, covering additional areas along various provincial routes. This move signifies a significant step in innovating environmentally friendly transportation and contributes to the shared goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The target is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 13,335 tons within a 5-year period.

Mr. Stephane Coum, Chief Executive Officer Food Group, Central Retail, stated that, “Tops is dedicated to setting an example as a sustainable retail leader, known as ‘Green & Sustainable Retail,’ in harmony with Central Retail’s aspiration to attain net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Most recently, Tops has partnered with DHL Supply Chain Thailand, a logistics expert, sharing a mission to advance sustainability in the logistics sector. This partnership includes the introduction of new trucks, powered by 100% electricity, starting with an initial fleet of 10 vehicles. We will use these trucks to distribute products from Tops daily stores across Bangkok, underlining Tops’ position as a leader in the food retail industry, with a forward-looking vision.”

Additionally, Tops has planned to expand the number of vehicles to 29 units by 2024. This includes both ambience trucks and chilled trucks. Furthermore, they will collaborate with partners to eliminate limitations in charging stations, ensuring comprehensive product transportation for long distances to major cities in various provinces such as Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Sawan, and Chiang Mai. It is estimated that this effort will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 2,667 tons per year and potentially cut carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 13,335 tons within a 5-year period. This reduction is equivalent to planting over 150,000 trees.

Mr. Steve Walker, CEO of DHL Supply Chain Thailand Cluster, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership and its advancements, said, “In our longstanding partnership with Central Food Retail Group, we’ve consistently embraced innovation throughout our warehouse and transport operations. Introducing our new electric vehicle fleet reflects our mutual vision that drives us forward into a future where electric vehicles and sustainable practices are the cornerstones of transportation. This is in line with our Green Transport Policy, where our primary goal is to make substantial reductions in carbon emissions in line with the Group’s Sustainability Roadmap. Together, we are finding logistics solutions that meet today’s demands and shape the future of logistics, delivering efficiency, sustainability, and excellence for generations to come.”

For over 25 years, DHL Supply Chain Thailand and Central Food Retail Group have maintained a strong relationship, developing service excellence in response to the dynamic growth of the retail industry. With a shared commitment to innovation and sustainability, both companies look forward to continuing their successful journey, serving the retail business with unparalleled logistics solutions.

These trucks can cover up to 200 kilometers on a single charge, providing the added advantage of fast charging capabilities. They reach full power in just 40 minutes, contributing to zero carbon emissions. In alignment with this green mission, DHL has set up three advanced charging stations at the Bangna Logistics Campus, catering to logistics destined for 25 Tops Daily branches across Bangkok. This underscores the significance of the delivery process and commitment to sustainable practices.

"Tops is committed to advancing our organization while enhancing the quality of life. We strongly believe everyone can contribute to creating a livable world through small yet impactful actions. This dedication is reflected in our ongoing project, 'Small Acts Together,' representing our four-pillar strategy in fostering happiness for a sustainable world. These four initiatives include: 1) 'Curating,' supporting local farmers and SMEs to generate employment and sustainable income; 2) 'Circulating,' aimed at redistributing surplus food to reduce waste; 3) 'Contributing,' focused on sharing happiness and contributing to societal betterment; and 4) 'Creating,' implementing environmentally friendly business practices. The introduction of electric trucks into our logistics system showcases our commitment to integrating technology and innovation into our operations, actively reducing carbon dioxide emissions. This resonates with our aspiration to become a sustainable green retail leader,” Mr. Coum concluded.
