สมุยโมเดล (Samui’s Zero Waste)

Central Retail builds on the success of Samui Model, from reducing waste to supporting Samui’s Zero Waste mission

From a successful partnership among FamilyMart, Koh Samui Municipality, and Municipal School 1 (Wat Lamai), Koh Samui were able to maximize the benefit from the processing of organic wastes.

Everyday, FamilyMart’s staff will separate the expired food products, unpack, gather, and send the organic waste to the school to be processed by the COWTEC machine into cooking gas, animal food, and fertilizer, which help the school save over 5,000 Baht per semester. The community then gets fertilizer and animal food that leads to higher quality produces including vegetables, fruits, and eggs. While all the produces become food supplies for school lunch program.

Moreover, “Central Retail” looks to build on the success to make Samui a model community for waste management by working closely with Suratthani Rajabhat University to set up the COWTEC machine for producing fertilizer and biogas.

The process starts with waste segregation at Central Festival Samui, FamilyMart, and Centara Hotels. The wastes then get transported to the university for processing, which allowห the students to learn about hotel and hospitality.

The fertilizer retrieved from the process will be used in the “Farm to table, Organic Café” project, a demonstration plant used as the organic farming example for the community. Moving forward, the organic products from this project will be made available in Tops Supermarket and Central Group’s shopping malls.
