Central Retail places importance on trying to solve the problem of plastic waste through research and development for innovation. In 2022, CRC has since collaborated with Biodegradable Packaging for Environment Public Company Limited (Gracz), one of Thailand’s leading producer of biodegradable packaging, and Kasetsart University’s Agricultural and Agro-Industrial Product Improvement Institute to conduct research and development (R&D) programs to produce a new type of compostable packaging from agricultural residue. This new type of sustainable packaging will be used to replace plastic packaging within CRC, and can also help reduce environmental issues surrounding air pollution caused from burning to dispose of agricultural residue. This packaging development aim to have a special attribute in helping to extend duration of food storage, and thus also help to reduce the amount of food waste. CRC plans to use this new sustainable packaging instead of single use plastics in operations by 2024.
